The first step is to find out if you're name is taken. That can be done at Network Solutions -- the company with the monopoly on the .com, .net and .org names.  

The next step is to reserve or activate that domain name. Reserving a name means you want to grab that name before someone else does, but you're not ready to activate a website. You have a couple choices here: you can either go directly through Network Solutions but you'll need to either be an ISP (Internet Service Provider) or shell out an extra $49 to have them reserve the name for you.
